SEGHILL RFC travelled to Newton Aycliffe in confident mood, having won there last season.
However, they were forced to make six changes to the starting XV that cruised to victory over Hartlepool BBOB the previous weekend.
They took the lead in the third minute with a Jake Armstrong penalty.
But they then could only rue defensive errors which gifted the home side a try just two minutes later.
A breakaway from halfway gave Aycliffe their second try after eight minutes, though Seghill hit straight back with a try for Armstrong.
Paul Latham then danced his was through the home defence for Seghill’s second try to give them a three-point lead at the break.
Seghill started slowly in the second half and another breakaway from halfwa egained the lead for the home side with a converted try.
This fired Seghill back into action and David Norris powered over for Seghill’s third try.
Seghill should have gone on to dominate in the closing stages, but when they failed to clear the ball from a scrum on their own try line, it was the Newton Aycliffe forwards who were first to react, scoring a try and taking the victory 22-18.
