SEGHILL Deputies’ fixture against Novos was switched from Novos to Welfare Park in a prelude to next weekend’s cup fixture.
Seghill dominated the early possession with some fine moves by the pack and runs from youngster Joseph McLean, but they didn’t open the scoring until the 19th minute when Kevin Shanks’ powerful run from the 22 saw him score in the right corner.
With the forwards proving a handful for the visitors, Seghill increased their lead on 30 minutes when David Norris dived over from a ruck on the five-metre line.
Two tries under the posts by Novos No. 4 Rob Campbell either side of the break, easily converted, gave the visitors the lead as they began to find a way to deal with the power of the Seghill pack.
Seghill thought they had regained the lead when scrum-half Dan Slater collected the ball at the back of a ruck and ran in to score, but the referee disallowed the try having seen punches thrown before the ball came out of the ruck.
Seghill continued to push forward and after a lovely run from Robbie Gray, George Hogg burst through for a try, converted by Dan Slater.
Novos hit back, but a try saving tackle by captain Frazer Hill on Rob Campbell, prevented them regaining the lead.
As Novos looked for a way through, Seghill’s indiscipline gifted them a penalty, but instead of taking the kick which would have sealed a draw, Novos kicked to touch, and from there Seghill’s defence held firm to seal a 17-14 victory.
