Ashington RFC 30-North Shields 29
Ashington, 3-21 down after 20 minutes, staged an excellent second half comeback to deservedly win this exciting league match.
Ash conceded three early tries to the bigger North Shields forwards, only managing a Jake McKay penalty in return. They began to fight their way back into the game and after 28 minutes a quick Johnny Arkle tap penalty saw fullback Owen Jarvis sear through a gap and feed a perfectly timed pass to winger John Tuck who crossed in the corner for the first of Ashingtons five tries.
After a period of North Shields pressure, Jarvis and Chris Johnson combined well to set young winger Jordan Miller free who sped down the left wing for Ashington’s second try.
On the stroke of half time North Shields extended their lead to 13-24 with a well struck penalty.
The visitors added their fourth and final try straight after half time, to give them a clear 13-29 lead.
Ash then produced an excellent team fight back based on a dominant scrum. Fly half Turner’s lovely loop and pass created the space for Tuck to score his second and Ashington’s third in the corner. This was quickly followed by a Johnny Arkle try after a period of sustained Ashington pressure.
With three minutes to go a bullocking Greg Henderson run and quick ruck ball created a gap, Jake McKay burst through to score out wide. McKay then slotted the conversion to give Ash the lead and finish the game on top.
Ash 2s had a narrow 19-15 defeat to rivals Morpeth.
