Gradwell and Hunt secure places in finals night

Round three of the Mark Williams Memorial Trophy was again held at Bedlington Station WMC on Thursday night, with 38 players from across the region competing for finals places.

Dave Gradwell, Graeme Stoddart, Adam Hunt and previous champion Davy Richardson would all feature in the final stages of the evening.

Hunt showed good form with solid wins against Joe Gaffney, Micky Grieves, Graham Fletcher, and Mark Stephenson to make his way to the first half final.

He would face Richardson who saw off threats from Andy Mabon, Tom Norton, Ryan Hanratty and a great semi-final win over James Forster, with both players contributing in the best of five legs with 13,15,13,13 and 15-dart games with Richardson taking the spoils.

The second half of the draw saw Gradwell up against a strong field and having to be at his best to get the upper hand with wins over Yogi Young, Davy Richardson, Joe Gaffney and Mark Stephenson, who had previously taken out the night’s highest checkout of 170 in a game against Paul Knighton.

Stoddart was also on form with wins over Jarrad Wilson, Graeme Fletcher, Allen George, and Andy Kelly.

The first final of the night was between Richardson and Adam Hunt, Richardson taking an early lead with scores of 180,100,131, in the first leg.

A scrappy second leg saw Hunt draw level before taking a 2-1 lead with the third leg containing scores of 96,140, 75, and 100.

He went on to complete his victory with a 16-dart leg with scores of 97, 81,134,123, 42 and double 12 taking him into the grand final night in August.

Gradwell and Stoddart contested the second final of the night with Gradwell taking the early initiative hitting scores of 85, 125, and 140 helping him to an early lead, and followed up with scores of 100, 85, 140, and a 72 checkout to go 2-0 ahead.

Stoddart hit back in style with 180, 120,100, 49, and 52 out shot to reduce the deficit, but Gradwell was to prove too strong with scores of 100, 85, 140, and 100 taking the victory and booking his place in the grand final.

The competition continues next week but will take a break the week after July 4 for the super league presentation night.
