Injuries play large part in Ashington defeat at Winlaton

Ashington RFC went down to Winlaton on Saturday as the home side ran in five first half tries.

Winlaton took an early lead with a well taken try before Ashington full-back Ryan Dodds stuck a 35-metre penalty and then added a second after Winlaton had further extended their lead with a second try.

Winlaton added a further three first half tries as Ashington lost Carr, Harrigan and then Storey to injuries and a rout seemed on the cards.

However, a galvanised Ashington finished the first half strongly and scored two deserved tries from Merryweather and Dodds to make it 29-16 athalf-time.

Winlaton had much of the attacking play in the second half, but dogged Ashington defending restricted them to two further tries and two penalties.

Ashington gave a debut to Josh Weeks who had an excellent game on the wing.

Ashington seconds had a great 29-26 victory against Winlaton seconds.

This Saturday Ashington are at home to Redcar and the England v Australia World Cup game will be on the large screen and TVs in the clubhouse at 8pm, and all welcome to the club’s ‘Aussie Barby’ night.
