Johnstone edged out in bout over the border

Coming off the back of a good win at Alnwick on St George’s Day, Ashington junior boxer Josh Johnstone travelled to Scotland at the weekend.

He took fight at short notice on the Chirnside show against host boxer and Scottish champion Ben Grant, who is in the championships at present.

The clash, the last bout of 12 on the evening, lived up to expectations with Grant taking the first round.

Johnstone came back in the next when he was asked to take the fight to his opponent and landed the cleaner shots, but Grant eventually emerged as the victor.

Ashington ABC coach Alan Buller said: “Unfortunately only one hand can be raised with no draws in amateur boxing and the verdict went in favour of Grant, but Josh was a credit to his club.

“However, the duo are to meet in a return contest in the near future so we will look forward to that.”
