Blyth RFC 32-30 Seghill
Blyth started the game well despite having to make several changes to their side on Saturday morning and soon forced Seghill into giving away penalties.
Three times the penalties were kicked to the corner but each time the Seghill defence worked hard to repel the Blyth forwards. Eventually captain Rose crashed over to give Blyth the lead, McCardel adding the extras.
At this stage the Blyth forwards were well in control and Stephenson burrowed his way over for the second try again converted by McCardel.
The visitors the got back into the game with a try and a penalty to narrow the score to 14-8. Frazer the Blyth prop then forced his way over with McCardel adding the conversion.
Again the visitors refused to give in and another try and a penalty again narrowed the score to 21-16.
Blyths bonus point fourth try was scored by Stephenson and a McCardel penalty gave Blyth a 13 point cushion but again the visitors hit back scoring two tries to give themselves the bonus point and taking the lead for the first time with only a few minutes left on the clock.
With Blyth desperate to maintain their promotion push they threw everything at Seghill and pressurised them into giving away a penalty in the last seconds just inside their own half. McCardel stepped up and slotted the kick from 40m out to win the game and consolidate second place in the league.
There are no games this week and Blyth’s next game is away to league leaders South Shields the following week, KO 3pm.
