Louie Cummings, who trains at the YMCA on Saturday morning and is part of Ashington Karate Club’s kata team this year, passed his black belt grading at the first attempt - which is rare throughout the country as the first time pass rate is under 25 per cent.

His instructors said they were delighted that he has attained the coveted black belt, not only doing well on the day, but because he has trained consistently hard and with an excellent attitude at all times.

They said Cummings has competed all year to a high standard and is a credit to the club and his instructors.

Anyone interested in starting karate can attend Ashington YMCA on a Saturday morning or call Jill Kelly on 07930 324556.
