Playing away to Gosforth at their temporary ground at Bullocksteads, Blyth knew they needed a result to move out of the bottom two.
But within five minutes poor tackling let the home side in for the first try, quickly followed by another to leave them trailing 14-0.
The Blyth forwards rallied and created long periods of pressure but only had one penalty as a reward.
Against the run of play Gosforth broke up field and scored a drop goal to make it 17-3 at half-time.
In the second half Blyth again created long periods of pressure, forcing the home side into giving away penalty after penalty, but instead of taking three points each time, Blyth elected to go for the tries but the normally reliable lineout failed to function and the Gosforth defence just held out.
In the closing stages as Blyth tired they conceded a further two tries.
This was a game that Blyth should have won with the possession they had, but poor tackling and decision making cost them dearly.
Next week’s game is away to Guisborough with a 2.25pm kick-off
Touch rugby sessions take place at the sports centre on Mondays at 6pm.
