Mixed night for club’s fighters

NEWBIGGIN Boxing Club were in action last week in Alnwick.

First up was Ben Rees against Darlington’s unbeaten Nathan Smith.

Both were determined to keep an unbeaten record and this showed in the first round.

In the second, Rees found his range while Smith tired, and in the third round Rees took over.

Another win for Rees, taking his record to five straight with two stoppages.

Newbiggin southpaw Lewis Scott fought Scottish and Commonwealth champion Tommy Philbin.

Scott took control in the first, landing fast right hooks. Philbin landed some serious body shots in the second which slowed Scott down.

Philbin did more in the last and took a close decision.

The second highlight of Newbiggin’s weekend was at Peterlee on Saturday.

Jimmy Tyers was representing the Tyne Tees and Wear against Daniel Purves from the full Scottish international team.

Tyers gave an excellent display and showed great strength and stamina and stormed to a 17-7 victory as theTyne Tees Wear beat the Scottish 12-4.

Training starts next week for the schoolboy championships in January. Newbiggin will have at least five entries.

All the boxers this week were excellent. Scott had an off night, but we will learn from it. Rees and Tyers proved they both have the desire and the ability to go all the way this season if all goes to plan.
