Morpeth RFC Under-15s have set themselves-up for a much anticipated cup clash with Novos this Sunday following a well-earned 29-22 victory over a good Gateshead side.

Opening and closing tries from big second row Joe Turnbull put the seal on a fine display by the Mitford Road youngsters in slippery and cold conditions on Tyneside.

There was plenty to impress the travelling supporters from the Morpeth side who had several players missing and others playing out of position.

Well marshalled by captain and stand-in fly-half Will Allen, they did enough of the basics right – in particular, strong tackling and sensible kicking for position – to take the points despite a late rally by Gateshead led by their back row.

Graeme Milne, Johnny Waters and George Devereux-Tinley all went over for tries to keep the Morpeth score ticking over and ensure the Mitford Road side never went behind after conceding an early lead.

Turnbull’s second try followed a wonderful kick-and-chase, which Allen gathered before setting up the powerful second row who was unstoppable from ten metres out. Jacob Crooks converted while Jake Stephenson had slotted home earlier in the match to add his name to the two-conversion tally.
