A LOCAL triathlon next month has been selected as a qualifier for the European Championships being held in Israel next year.
Newbiggin Spring Triathlon, held in the village, is traditionally the north east region’s final open water triathlon of the season.
But this year, officials at British Triathlon have declared the event an ETU European Championship Qualifying event for Eilat in Israel in April 2012.
Hopeful athletes from all over the UK will arrive in Newbiggin for the event on September 11 aiming to grab one of the prestigious slots on offer.
The competition at Newbiggin Bay is described as delivering a special experience for athletes and spectators alike.
There will be a 750-metre swim in the bay behind the protective breakwater, a 23km bike ride over three laps on closed roads in the town, and a 5.2km run along the promenade.
The event’s reputation and success is growing, as does the race, by more than 25 per cent year-on-year; as once again it is full with an expanding reserve list.
The race starts a 2pm on the day.
