Rugby league club Cramlington Rockets’ Community team have been working with Burnside and Shanklea Primary schools to help promote the positive message of being active and eating healthy.

Last week the team started their annual ‘Be Active’ Week at Burnside.

Coaching every child in the school, those taking part were each treated to a fun and vigorous 45-minute session ran by head community coach Danny ‘Bear’ Gilroy and community manager Steve Beaty.

Burnside Primary School manager, Elaine Wright, was thrilled with the day’s activities.

“It’s fantastic to get the Rockets Community down for special projects like this,” she said.

“The children feed off the enthusiasm of Steve and Bear, so it’s been great to see all their happy faces.”

Steve Beaty added: “We love coming to events such as this one, this is what the community department is about; engaging children in activity and enjoying sport.

“The children, and as always the staff, have been superb and we look forward to coming back again.”

But the fun did not stop there.

Later in the week, the community department were at Shanklea Primary School bright and early to spread the word about healthy eating.

Over three classroom sessions they spoke to almost a 100 Year 4 pupils who were excited to see an interactive presentation on eating healthy before coaching the school’s Year 3s outside in the afternoon.

PE co-ordinator for Shanklea, Jade Martin, said: “Rockets Community has been amazing since coming into the school. We have noticed a massive uptake in not just rugby but in other sports as well and that’s down to the Rockets.”

Danny ‘Bear’ Gilroy added: “We are always happy to come to events like these and spread the word of being healthy.

“At the Rockets Community we are very aware that physical activity is just a small part of being healthy and we are very proud that Shanklea Primary School also recognise this.”
