THREE youngsters are one step closer to meeting their tennis heroes after being selected among seven from the north east for a trial.
The group are through to the final stage of the selection process to become a Barclays Ball Kid for this year’s Barclays ATP World Tour Finals held at the O2 Arena, London, in November.
The successful children were among 40 that took part in the Barclays Ball Kids regional selection trials at The Northumberland Club.
And Oliver Jansen, 13, from Morpeth; Peter Musgrave, 12, from Cramlington, and Dominic Thompson, 13, from Morpeth were selected.
Peter said: “It was a really fun, enjoyable and exciting day. It was lots of fun learning and doing the ball drills and there was a great atmosphere amongst all the kids.”
Thirty aged between 12 and 16 will be selected to join the world’s top eight tennis players at the ATP finals.
Oliver said: “I entered the competition last year and got to the final 100 in London. I felt excited but wasn’t too nervous and having done it last year I knew what to expect.
“It would be amazing to become a Barclays Ball Kid, especially having got so close last year.”
Dominic said: “I was a finalist last year reaching the last 115.
“I was really excited about the trial in Newcastle this year.
“The thing that excited me most was the thought that if I did really well I might get picked to go to London again and have a chance of making the final Barclays Ball Kids team.
“It would be a chance in a lifetime and I would be so happy. To be a ball kid for the top eight tennis players in the world would be such a fantastic experience.”
