Newbiggin Boxing Club are celebrating another national champion in their ranks.

Jimmy Tyers made it third time lucky in the English National Championships when he dismantled Repton’s Joe Keller at the weekend.

It had been a tough route to the final for Tyers as he faced top fighter Louis Clarridge of Hull St Pauls, and took a clear points win after dominating all three rounds.

In the semi final in Liverpool, he took on current champion Callum O’Brien.

Facing Keller in the final, Tyers took control in the first round and dominated.

By the end of the third round and final round, Keller was burned out by Tyers was still strong and in control as he took a convincing points victory.

The win places Tyers in the running to compete for England, in the three nations, to hopefully gain a place on the GB team.

The National Schoolboy Championships start next week and Newbiggin have six entries.

Joe Tyers looks to defend his National title. Also competing for National victories are Michael Stewart, Jordan Rowley, Owen Rees, PJ Holmes, and Mason McGuigan.

Lewis Scott’s opponent for March 7, has been confirmed as Lithuanian Arvydas Trinzo. He is a step up in class for Scott but a convincing victory against him will set the stage for bigger things, including titles this year.

Some tickets are still available priced at £35. A bus will be available from the Shakespeare Tavern, Guidepost.
