Morpeth RFC U16s got their new year campaign off to a winning start with a hard fought 34-15 win over local rivals Ponteland.
In testing conditions at Ponteland Rugby Club, a superb solo effort from flying winger Reece Jones was among the highlights as Morpeth’s determination and gritty forward play saw them through to victory over a resilient opposition.
Winger George Devereux-Tinley opened the scoring for Morpeth early in the first half as the visitors pushed hard in the face of strong winds and the finger numbing cold.
Further tries from flanker Lewis Nicholson, Josh White – playing at full-back – and stand-in centre Joe Turnbull were enough to keep the Morpeth scoreboard ticking over before a great move orchestrated by fly-half Sam Eyres saw Jones jink his way over the try line in the final quarter of the match.
Turnbull scored his second try in the final minutes while Eyres added two conversions to secure final victory and set-up the Mitford Road youngsters for a successful denouement to their season – including the exciting prospect of county cup run.
