Ashington were back in league action at the weekend in a must win game away to second bottom South Tyneside College (STC).
The home side started strongly and Ash found themselves 10-0 down to two unconverted tries after ten minutes.
The visitors began to claw their way back into the game and were awarded a penalty five-metres out after a driving maul, and John Goose crashed over after a run by Newman. Unfortunately Elliot’s conversion hit the post.
STC came back strongly and Ash put themselves under pressure by missing touch, however, Johnstone stole the ball at the ruck after a good tackle by Nathan Whitworth to relieve the pressure.
By now the Ash forwards were starting to dominate what was turning into a scrappy and niggly affair as the home side began to lose their composure.
South Tyneside ended up receiving three yellow cards during the game for foul play to Ashington’s one for retaliation, the latter losing Ashington a great position five metres out in front of the posts.
Ash continued to dominate and Rosser followed up his own chip to set up an attacking scrum and from close in Johnstone crashed over to level the scores 10-10 at half-time.
The second half continued to be a scrappy game with Ash having more of the possession and pressure but unable to cross the line, and College looking dangerous on the break, with Elliot forced into making two try saving tackles.
A strong run by skipper Butler set up a penalty in front of the posts 30 metres out, which Ash unbelievably kicked for the corner. The resulting lineout was not straight and STC were able to kick clear.
Against the run of play STC scored a breakaway try to give them a 15-10 lead with ten minutes to go.
Ash fought back strongly and in the last play of the game debutant Sam Walton drove over from five metres out for a try under posts, coolly converted by Rosser to give Ash a deserved last gasp victory.
In a good day for the club, Ashington Pirates won 47-15 and are now into their cup semi-final.
Next week Ash entertain bottom side Hartlepool BBOB, while there is a past players’ lunch at 12.30pm, and any former players interested in attending should contact the club.
