Ashington boxers Liam Huntley and Josh Johnstone have been in action this past week.
Huntley followed up the previous week’s stoppage win at Boldon to step up against Matthew Stanley of Grainger Park.
The venue was the Union Jack Sports Centre in Throckley and Huntley boxed well with some great combinations through round one.
In round two, boxing behind the jab and delivering some strong punches, Huntley took control and his opponent received a standing count.
In round three the relentless pressure continued and he came away with yet another win.
Then up stepped 16-year-old Johnstone, whose opponent was Spennymoor’s Alan Carnby.
They had previously met twice, five years earlier when Carnby took a split decision and again in October 2014 when Carnby again prevailed in a controversial split decision win.
Johnstone boxed well with some good inside boxing, taking steps away from the long reach of his opponent and delivering some good solid right hands.
Johnstone never took a backward step and came away with a unanimous win to cap a great performance by both Ashington boxers.
Coach Alan Buller commended his young boxers.
Ashington Amateur Boxing Club will be holding their own show on Saturday, January 31, at Ashington Central Club.
Tickets are £15 and can be purchased from Alan Buller on 07933 132856.
