Captain Johnny makes it a hat-trick
Johnny Arkle has been named as captain of Ashington Rugby Club 1st XV for the 2021-22 season.
It means he will become the first player to captain the club for three consecutive seasons since Ken Patton in 1974.
Meanwhile, the club are on the look-out for a new men’s assistant coach to work alongside the head coach and assistant coaches already in position.
Ashington run three senior men’s sides, with the 1st XV playing in Division 2 of the Durham & Northumberland League.
The new coach will have responsibility for coaching the forwards and be able to develop played.
Previous experience is not essential, but any applicant must have a good understanding of the modern game, and of set piece techniques.
A club spokesman said they must be enthusiastic and willing to commit to at least one coaching session per week. They must also be willing to work towards achieving qualification at an England Rugby Coaching Award (Level 2).

Ashington Rugby Club are planning to hold a senior men and women’s captains’ dinner on September 25 at 7pm.
Tickets, priced at £15, are currently on sale, and already more than 50 have been sold. The evening will include speeches from senior officials, men and woman and veterans and will be followed by live music.
