Second team fall short of target

Ashington seconds remain third in the B1 division table despite their four-match winning sequence coming to an end on Saturday when they went down by 30 runs against Annfield Plain seconds at Langwell Crescent.

Opener David Newstead was the mainstay of the visitors innings with 89 out of a total of 165 whilst James Richards (3-21) and Martin Thewlis (3-41) shared six wickets.

Alex Storey took 2-10 with Michael Thewlis and Craig Wood picking up one wicket each.

In reply, Matty Collins struck 32 but Ashington’s hopes rested on in-form skipper Martin Thewlis, who was last man out for 63 with the Wansbeck outfit falling 31 runs short of their target.

Stuart Newton took 4-30 from 13 overs for the visitors.
