Martin Thewlis steered Ashington’s third XI to a nailbiting victory against Tynemouth at Langwell Crescent on Sunday to lift the Ian Appleby Cup.
The game, held over from last season, saw the visitors dismissed for 74 in 29 overs with Matty Collins (3-13), Chris Watson (3-20), Adam Nichol (2-3) and Graham Rogerson successful in the bowling stakes.
But Ashington, who were 40-7 in reply at one stage, still required five to win when the ninth wicket fell and last man Ant Watson came to the wicket.
But in a gripping finale, Thewlis – who went in at number six – kept a cool head.
He clinched victory for his side in the 28th over by collecting two runs from a sweep shot to end unbeaten with a match winning 31.
