Williams takes captain’s role for new season

GREG Williams will lead Ashington Cricket Club for a second successive season when the new Northumberland & Tyneside Senior campaign gets under way on April 20.

Williams was re-elected as skipper at the club’s AGM.

And the 33-year-old is as enthusiastic as last year.

He said: “I enjoyed being captain. We got off to a good opening but then the bad weather kicked in and it developed into a stop-start season where we couldn’t get into the swing of things.”

Williams reiterated what he stated before a ball was bowled last season – that the club will take promotion if it comes around.

“Our attitude was that if we got ourselves into a promotion place then we would go up,” he said.

“Ideally we wanted a couple of seasons in the A2 division for our players to develop but this term we’ll be looking to push even more.”

Scott Dunn was elected as vice-captain of the first XI with Daniel Grant appointed as team manager.

Martin Thewlis will again lead the second XI with Dale Ross as his right hand man whilst Matty Storey will captain the thirds with Josh Robinson as his assistant.

Meanwhile Sonu Singh has joined Ashington from Newcastle City.

“Sonu is an all rounder – a right handed batsman and right arm seam bowler – and we are delighted to have signed him,” added Williams.

The Colliers first XI open their programme with an away clash at Chopwell.
