Fresh from being crowned Chortle’s ‘ Best Large Venue for Comedy in the North’, seeing off decade old institutions of the comedy industry in the process, Blyth-based Punch-Drunk Comedy is set to host a launch event in Bedlington in partnership with Bradley’s Smile Trust.

In keeping with their community-based ethos, Punch-Drunk Comedy uses its events to donate a percentage of revenue to a variety of trusts and causes.

The flagship Blyth event is partnered with Princess Ellie’s Trust, run by local couple Rachel and Dan Long, who sadly lost their daughter to meningitis and who have campaigned tirelessly for awareness and funding for research and treatment ever since.

Their work in the Blyth area has raised a staggering £87,000 to date and heavily contributed to the government’s decision last month to announce the introduction of a nation-wide meningitis-B vaccine for children.

Punch-Drunk’s Gavin Humphries said: “Whilst we’re gathering in numbers to laugh our socks off, it seems fitting that we use this energy to do some good in our community."

Bradley’s Smile Trust, founded by Bedlington couple Terrie Maddison and Peter Tate Jnr, will direct donations to charity financed organisations Crawford House and Little Miracles.

The organisations have been crucial in the care and treatment of Terrie’s son, Bradley, who was born with two extremely rare lung conditions and actually has a major operation on the day of the event.

“We’re calling on all of Bedlington to unite behind this event and display their support for Bradley on such an important day for him and his family,” added Gavin.

“Bradley is famed for his infectious smile, and what better way to show our support for him than with collective laughter and good spirits.”

The Bedlington launch event will feature a trademark line-up of the nation’s best comedy talent, starring former Scottish Comedian Of The Year, Mark Nelson.

It takes place in Netherton Club, on Tuesday, April 21, with doors opening at 7pm.
